Social Work CPD Newsletter November 2022

11th November 2022

As the nights draw longer and the days shorter and shorter, we would like to share some of our news, developments and teaching schedules for the next couple of months.

Weather Wednesday: The days are getting shorter as we move toward winter solstice - Salisbury Post | Salisbury Post

Our first Critical Thinking Workshop for CPD students took place, face to face at BU, on the 6th October 22 and we had 34 practitioners from across health and social sciences join us to discuss how we can create good academic writing. Critical thinking and academic writing are intrinsically linked and to see our students develop their arguments with underpinning research and literature was fascinating – there were quite a few lightbulb moments! Working across the sector, the participants were encouraged to think outside of the box and challenge their own perceived knowledge.

I am now going to facilitate this workshop three times a year and the next date is the 8th February 2023.

I am also really excited to be able to invite you all to our next big event:

BU Leadership Conference 2022- Creating Inclusive Work Communities.
Building bridges across academia, practice and leadership

Date: 09.12.22
Time: 9.30 – 13.30
Venue:  Online via Zoom

2022 has been a year of challenge; Covid-19 has fundamentally changed our relationship with work and our appreciation of life. Brexit and the emerging energy crisis have accelerated personal and resourcing pressures across industries and concerns around recruitment and retention have increased. Individuals are faced with the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and some have to make the decision to heat or eat. Anti-racist and inclusive practise is expected, whilst societal and organisational structures are still evolving to move beyond privilege.

Our conference will address these and other concerns and challenges across Health and Social Care with a focus on retention and how we can create inclusive work communities.

I look forward to seeing you all either in person or online soon!
Take care
